Grafton has a lot of tree cover — wooded lots, old stone-wall property lines, and hilly, tree-lined roads that make the town feel established and shaded. That same character is what puts trees over driveways, roofs, and power lines all over town. We're based just up the road in Northborough and work in Grafton year-round, including plenty of storm calls, so we've gotten a good look at which trees actually come down here and why. This is what we watch for, and what we'd want you to watch for too.
The trees most likely to fail in a Grafton storm
Not every tree is equally at risk. In our experience across Grafton's yards and wood lines, a handful of patterns show up again and again:
- Tall white pines with weak unions. White pine is common in Grafton's wooded lots and grows fast and tall, but it's also prone to codominant trunks — two main stems splitting from roughly the same point low on the tree. That union is a structural weak spot, and in high wind it's often where the tree snaps or splits.
- Leaning trees with root heave. A tree that's leaning more than it used to, especially with the soil cracked or lifted on one side of the base, is telling you its root system is losing its grip. This shows up a lot after a wet season, when saturated ground lets a tree's roots shift.
- Large oaks with dead limbs. Grafton has a lot of mature oak, and a big oak can look perfectly healthy from the ground while carrying dead or dying limbs high in the crown. Those limbs are heavier than they look and are often the first thing to come down in wind, sometimes long before the tree itself is in trouble.
- Shallow-rooted trees in wet soil. Some of Grafton's lower, damper lots hold water after storms. Trees growing in consistently wet or compacted soil tend to root shallow, which means less anchoring when the wind picks up — even on a tree that otherwise looks fine.
How to spot a hazard tree before it comes down
You don't need to be an arborist to catch most of the warning signs. Walk your property and look for:
A new or worsening lean. A slight, long-standing lean on an otherwise healthy tree isn't automatically a problem. A lean that's new, or that's gotten more pronounced since last year, usually is.
Cracked or lifted soil at the base. This is the clearest sign of root heave — the roots on one side are starting to pull out of the ground. Once you see this, the tree is at real risk in the next strong wind.
Dead wood in the upper crown. Bare branches with no leaves in season, or brittle limbs that snap off easily, are common on otherwise living trees and are frequently the first pieces to drop in a storm.
Cracks, cavities, or fungus on the trunk. A split running up the trunk, a hollow you can see or hear when you knock on it, or mushroom-like fungus growing at the base or on the roots are all signs of internal decay that won't show from the outside otherwise.
Peeling bark or dieback on one side. Bark that's sloughing off in sheets, or one side of the canopy that's thinner and browner than the rest, often points to damage or disease that's weakening the tree's structure.
When to remove or trim proactively — before storm season
The best time to deal with a hazard tree is before a storm, not during one. Late summer and early fall, ahead of the nor'easters and winter storms that hit Central Massachusetts, is a good window to get ahead of it. A few guidelines:
Trim if the tree is otherwise sound. Removing dead limbs, thinning a dense crown so wind passes through instead of pushing against it, and correcting a weak union while it's still manageable can add years to a healthy tree's life and take real risk off the table. Remove if the structure is compromised. Root heave, a hollow trunk, a major crack, or a lean that keeps getting worse usually means the tree's days are numbered, and it's safer to take it down on your terms than to wait and find out the hard way. Our tree removal page covers how that process works.
Don't wait for "just one more season." A hazard tree doesn't heal itself. Every storm it survives is one more chance for the same weak point to finally give out — often onto a roof, a car, or a power line instead of open lawn.
